Apple Wallet is one of the most useful apps available in iOS – it’s useful for organizing concert tickets, boarding passes, debit cards, and loyalty cards. And your NHS Covid-19 Vaccination Pass from a few weeks. While it’s mostly only been tweaked in the past few iOS updates, Wallet is rumored to be getting some major upgrades in Apple’s latest operating system version — iOS 15 — due out this fall.

First, Apple hopes to replace not only paper tickets, but physical keys as well. Yes really! There are plans to make Apple Wallet compatible with homes, hotels, offices and even cars equipped with digital key technology.

That would mean you can open doors with just a tap on your iPhone or Apple Watch. It would not only mean the end of lockout and will be especially useful for business travelers and offices that need to control access. Not only that, but it means you can grant friends and family temporary access – before the electronic code changes and they’re locked out again. It’s like lending them an extra set of keys, but without having to remember to pick them up again!

Car keys may have to wait a while unless you own a BMW as it is the only manufacturer to support it now. But in the future, you could lock and unlock your car, open the trunk, and use the horn, all with just your device.

Along with this one, you get a few smaller tweaks. Old boarding passes and event tickets are now automatically sucked up from the app. Instead of appearing in a list, they are moved to an “expired” section. There will also be an option to keep them visible.

Apple is also adding the ability to download multiple passes at once – useful if you’ve bought concert tickets for a group or if you’re going to the movies with your family.

Unfortunately, Apple fans in the UK and Europe will have to wait for what is arguably the best new feature: adding your government ID and driver’s license to the app. Never get caught buying wine at the supermarket (thankfully) or forget to put your driver’s license in the glove box.

However, as Apple will need to work with authorities to bring it in, it’s only coming to select US states for now – and it could be some time before it rolls out around the world.
